The Issues

Education

Iwen has been continuously active in the school community, from being involved in her daughter's PTA to sitting on her local CEC, learning it from the inside out. She is invested in making sure that all students can reach their full potential and allow them to strive for educational excellence.  Her plan to ensure all students succeed includes:

• Expanding access to the SHSAT and building more Specialized High Schools across New York City, to provide more opportunities for exceptional students. 

• Investing in public school education to make sure that every student has what  they need to succeed. 

• Making sure all students have access to a Gifted & Talented education and provide enrichment programs in all schools. 

• Fighting  for additional resources for special education students, and helping parents through the IEP process.

• Passing legislation to mandate a social worker and guidance counselor in every school, because focusing on a child’s entire education and wellbeing in the school setting is important. 

• Expanding quality, free after school programs. 

Iwen is also committed to improving our public higher education systems. The City University of New York (CUNY) is a way towards the middle class. Iwen supports the New Deal for CUNY which would make tuition free.
